5 signs that you need a new boiler

Are you unsure if you need a new boiler or to just need to repair your current one? It’s a difficult question, taking into consideration short-term and long-term costs. Repairing a boiler is a cheap ‘quick-fix’, but sometimes it’s time to accept a newer, more energy efficient model, that will save you lots more money over the next 10 years.

Regular breakdowns

Are you constantly having problems with your boiler or water pressure? This is unlikely to be resolved by quick fix boiler repairs. The replacement parts and repair costs add up – over time you’ll see yourself spending the same, if not more, than you would by purchasing a brand-new model. Repairs are often quick fixes, hiding the fact that your boiler is no longer functioning properly. A newer model will be more efficient and more reliable, meaning you are also spending less money on energy bills.

Your boiler is over 10 years old

After 10 years it is often time to invest in a newer model. Your boiler may still be going strong, however it’s important to consider the huge technology advances that can happen in that time period. Again energy efficiency is important here, but also new safety elements and smart controls. These can help you monitor your energy usage and control temperature levels wherever you are in the world – even if you are lying on a beach on holiday and have forgotten to turn off the heat!

Water leaks

A water leak can cause lots of damage – not only to your boiler, but your home too! Make sure you get in touch with an engineer as soon as possible to prevent it causing any more problems.

You can smell gas

If you can smell gas, you need to vacate the building immediately, vent the building and call the Gas Emergency Services on 0800 111 999.

Alternatively, other smells (e.g. burning) can suggest other issues with your boiler – it is best to call your engineer to investigate properly.

There is a yellow flame

If your flame is yellow, rather than blue, this indicates a serious problem and it suggests a high risk of leaking carbon monoxide. Exposure can cause sickness, dizziness, fatigue and headaches.
